Musician, Artist, Composer and Sound Designer
Introduction
Yan Yulong (b.1989, Harbin) is best known as the frontman and guitarist of Beijing’s neo-psychedelic band Chui Wan, though he has also been an active presence in the Chinese and overseas rock, experimental, and avant-garde music scenes since 2009, worked at Maybe Mars Records and Maybe Noise Records.
He collaborates with a wide variety of musicians and artists on projects including composition, improvisation, dance, theatre, video art, fashion, independent publishing and more. He also creates sound design for architectural studios, galleries, museums, and site-specific spaces using materials including linear FM and plunder-phonics, approaching sound as an installation medium.
In addition to electric and acoustic violin in drone, noise, and avant-garde performance, he also plays gamelan and sings folk songs. In the past year and a half, he has been living and working in Chiang Mai, Singapore and Kyoto, where he has participated in local music and dance scenes while also studying, composing, recording and performing.
His recent projects include the interactive sound installation Scare the Muggles for By Art Matters Museum (2023–2024), co-producing Carsick Cars’ album Aha (2024), and the solo album Leap into the Void alongside a Japan tour (2025).
